My Favorite Websites

Everybody did an excellent job on their websites, but here are some of my favorites.

1. Monideepa's website was awesome! I liked how she had a pattern background without looking too cluttered. Also the pictures of her family and music was very interesting.

2. Mica Segal's website was also very cool. Her design layout was very neat and I enjoyed listening to her talk about her site.

3. Emily Hilliard's website was really cool. I liked looking at all over her photoshop collages and she had a lot of really neat information on her site.

HTML

Html is important to know especially for web designers even though there are sophisticated web-authoring softwares because it helps web designers know the origins of websites. HTML also comes in handy when these softwares are unavailable. A web designer can always open notepad to create a website even when the internet is not working; thus, a web designer can always update their sites without losing a step.

Favorite PowerPoints

My two favorite PowerPoint presentations were Moni's and Mica's. Moni's designt was incredible and her portrayal of her content using the two different graphs was very cool and really explained the meaning of supply and demand. Mica's was so much fun to listen to because she did something different with her PowerPoint and told a story, the design was very simple so that her voice telling the story was the main focus.

Listening to everybody's PowerPoints was a lot of fun and everyone did such a great job!

Five PowerPoint Guidelines

PowerPoint presentations are very useful when trying to communicate a message to a large group of people; however, there are some guidelines one should follow when making a PowerPoint presentation.

1. Keep it Simple- By keeping your presentation clean and easy to follow, your audience can be more engaged in the message of your presentation instead of the message being communicated in the presentation. There should be lot's of negative space in a PowerPoint presentation and there should not be too much information on the slides. The audience came to hear the presentor, not to see a PowerPoint, so make sure that that you're not reading off the PowerPoint the entire presentation.

2. Limit Animation- Animation can be a fun part of a presentation, but it distracts the audience from paying attention to the message. Also, animations can come off immature and make you look unprofessional.

3. Have a Visual Theme, but avoid using PowerPoint templates- Having the same template throught a PowerPoint presentation unites the entire presentation and makes it look professional. Having a different template per slide makes the presentation choppy and immature. Also, try to create an original template because most of the templates set on Microsoft Office have been seen before.

4. Use High-Quality Photographs- Instead of using clip art, use an actual photo. Clip Art has been seen before and can make the whole presentation seem unprofessional. Keep your photos real and make them blend with the slides to help your presentation. Even on some slides it would be better to put up a powerful picture instead of a list of bullet points.

5. Use Appropriate Charts- Charts can greatly benefit a PowerPoint presentation, but if they're not appropriate, they can distract the audience from the message. Use a chart that would best present the information and don't squeeze too much information into a single chart.

Bad PowerPoint presentations can get really annoying. When a teacher uses them in class and doesn't go off from the PowerPoint it makes me wonder why I paid a bunch of money to come to a university when I can just download their PowerPoint presentations and learn the same thing. Also, goofy animations get really old, really quickly. When it takes a person longer to go through all the animations than to present their material it distracts me from the message the presentor is trying to convey.

I hope these tips help everyone when figuring out how to design their own PowerPoint presentation!

Chris Nolan Presentation

I learned a lot from Chris Nolan's presentation, especially about how to use Google to my advantage. I can limit my search by typing in ":website" or "+:website" or "-:website" to make sure that I find websites that will benefit my research.

One thing that surprised me is to know that some of the websites posted in the first 100 websites on Yahoo may not be in the first 100 for Google. I usually thought that when you searched Google, you searched through Yahoo or any other search as well. I now know that it is useful to try out all of the searches to ensure that you find many useful websites.

Copyright

In 1998, the Disney corporation was worried about the copyright of their famous characters and went to the government about it. The government then passed a law called the Sonny Bono Act(also called the Mickey Mouse protection act) that extended the term of copyright an additional twenty years. The act protected the lovable charachters but also protected a lot of other materials that are not really in use and don't really need to be copyrighted.

The act keeps copyrighted material safe for another twenty years, thus giving the original creators protection of their material from others who might want to make money off of their characters. Thus, Disney does not have to worry about others taking their characters and making money off of them when Disney was the original creator. The act is effective and makes sure that copyrighted material is well kept.

Although the act keeps material safe for another twenty years, the act protects a lot of material that does not make a profit. For example, if somebody wrote a paper a long time ago and according to previous laws, would be allowed in the public domain. The paper does not make a profit and would not harm the original creator from others using it. It just makes it difficult for others to use their material when it should be in the public domain.

Personally, I think the Sonny Bono Act makes life more difficult. I know that some of my teachers want to put up material on the web to make it easier for us to read essays for class. But I always have to go up to the library to go to the reserves to get the information. The material is old and would not harm the original creator from having it in the public domain, it just makes the public's life harder from trying to get that information.
